Plastic surgery comes in all different types and is performed for a number of reasons on many areas of the body. The most common reasons to get plastic surgery are either for cosmetic purposes or reconstructive purposes. You might also get plastic surgery to correct an issue like sleep apnea, insomnia, back pain, and more. Plastic surgery is most commonly performed on the breasts, fat, body, face and neck, and genital areas.

Within the breast group of plastic surgeries, there are four types. Breast augmentation, breast reduction, breast lift, and fat grafting breast augmentation. The first is used to enlarge the breasts. Implants of a chosen size are inserted into the breasts, bringing them to the patients desired size. The second surgery, breast reduction, is to make breasts manageable if they are too large. This solves problems like back pain and cysts that oversized breasts cause. Mastopexy is the medical term for breast lift, which is a surgery wherein sagging breasts are lifted. In cases where fat is removed from one area and inserted into the breasts for augmentation, the surgery is called fat grafting breast augmentation.

When it comes to cosmetic surgeries for eliminating fat, there are two main options. Liposuction and nonsurgical fat reduction. Liposuction can be performed by laser, ultrasonic waves, or traditionally. Nonsurgical fat reduction uses heating and cooling along with other methods to eliminate fat from outside the body.

A body lift is a surgery compromising of many individual lifts, such as an arm lift, a thigh lift, a gluteal augmentation, etc. Within this category is also the tummy tuck, which is a procedure used to flatten the abdominal area. The medical term for this procedure is abdominoplasty. A mommy makeover is another type of body lift. This is a combination of any surgeries that bring a new mothers body back to its pre-baby state.

There are many face and neck surgeries that help revive that youthful look, but some also are used for reconstructive and medical purposes. The most common is a facelift, which is used to regain volume and tightness of the skin. A brow lift brightens the face by opening the eyes. Blepharoplasty is also known as eyelid surgery; this procedure freshens the face by opening the eyes while also correcting the vision problems older people get when their eyelids droop over their eyes. Otoplasty is ear surgery. This surgery can either reconstruct a damaged ear or lessen the size of oversized ears.

The most common female genital surgery is a labiaplasty. This surgery is used to reshape the labia, making it smaller or changing it to meet the patient’s desired end look. No labia is the same and no labia is ugly, but some look strange and insecurities impair the patient’s sexual experiences. For others the labia is just too large, making it hard to keep clean. Labiaplasty can solve both of these issues.

Although these are the most common cosmetic surgeries, there are many more to be discussed. Cosmetic surgery is often underestimated.
