Permanent makeup is a specialized kind of tattoo that resembles makeup. This tattoo permanently changes the pigment of the skin to appear like makeup. The procedure is also known as dermapigmentation, micropigmentation, or cosmetic tattooing.
Permanent makeup can enhance the eyes by adding permanent eyeliner, enhance the lips by adding permanent tinting, or the enhance coloring of the skin. It can also help people whose skin is damaged by accidents or disease. Eyebrows, scars and even the areolae of the breast can be concealed or enhanced with permanent makeup.
How is It Performed?
Permanent makeup is applied the same way a tattoo is applied. A technician uses special equipment that inserts a sterile needle into the skin and releases pigment. Often, a patch with pigment is applied to the skin days before the tattoo is applied to check for allergies to the pigment. During the procedure, the technician sketches the area where the tattoo will be applied with a sterile surgical pen, and then applies an anesthetic gel to the area.
The technician will use a sterile hollow, vibrating needle and apply it to the skin, leaving a droplet of pigment with every insertion of the needle.
