Plastic surgery is performed for a number of reasons. Although many chalk plastic surgery’s purpose up to vanity, in many cases it can do more for a person’s health. Reconstructive surgery is a vital part of recovery for many who suffer trauma. It can also solve problems like sleep apnea, back pain, and insomnia. The most common categories of plastic surgery are breast, fat reduction, body lifts, face and neck, and genital surgery
In South Florida, there are four main breast surgeries. Breast augmentation is the process of having an implant inserted into the breast to make the breasts larger in appearance and feel. A breast reduction is performed when breasts are unmanageably large, causing symptoms like back pain and cysts. Sagging breasts are corrected through mastopexy, which is a breast lift. Breast augmentation can also be performed using fat from another area of the body. This is called fat grafting breast augmentation.
There are three cosmetic procedures that eliminate fat from the body. These procedures are traditional liposuction, Laser/Vaser liposuction, and nonsurgical fat removal. Traditional liposuction injects liquid in between the muscle and fat, making the two easy to separate. The fat is then suctioned out. Laser liposuction liquefies fat, while Vaser uses ultrasonic waves to break up fat. Nonsurgical fat reduction uses a combination of heating, cooling, and more to eliminate fat without performing surgery.
There are many types of body lifts. An arm lift is performed on flabby arms, a thigh lift on flabby thighs. Gluteal augmentation will solve the issue of a saggy buttocks. A tummy tuck rids you of extra skin and stomach spillover by tightening the muscle and fascia in the abdominal area. A mommy makeover is a combination of lifts that bring a new mother’s body back to its former glory. A body lift is a combination of multiple lift surgeries.
Face and neck procedures can be used to regain a youthful appearance and in some cases for medical purposes. Rhinoplasty makes the nose aesthetically pleasing while also fixing issues like sleep apnea and insomnia. A facelift tightens and lifts features, eliminating wrinkles and reviving the youthful look you miss. Otoplasty is ear surgery, which can be used to make large ears smaller or to reconstruct damaged ears. A brow lift opens up the eyes by raising the brow at the arch and tip. Eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, can correct vision issues caused by sagging eyelids.
Female genital surgeries most often consist of labiaplasty. This surgery is used to reshape labia that either looks strange or is too large. Although each labia is different and no labia is strange, some people find their labia too embarrassing, which is hindering to their sex life. Large labia can also be difficult to keep clean, which can lead to a painful infection.
Although these are the most common cosmetic surgeries in South Florida, there are many more to be discussed. Cosmetic surgery is often underestimated. If you want to learn more or schedule a consultation with Dr. Andrew Ress, our board certified plastic surgeon and his team, give us a call today.
