What does breast reconstruction involve?

[liv]® Breast Reconstruction often involves multiple procedures that are performed in stages.[liv]® Breast Reconstruction surgery can be combined at the time of your mastectomy or can be postponed until a later date.

[liv]® Breast Reconstruction:

Implant-based reconstruction: This method a breast implant is used to form the new breast. There may be two stages to this option. First, a temporary implant (or tissue expander) is placed under the chest muscle and gradually filled with saline to help create space for the permanent implant. This process can take a couple weeks to a couple months depending on your body’s tolerance. After the area has been stretched the long-term implant is inserted.

Flap reconstruction : This method we use your own tissue from another part of your body to form the new breast. We can use tissue from you back, buttocks or abdomen to create the new breast mound. The results of flap reconstruction are generally more natural looking, and there are no concerns about problems with an implant in the future.

Do reconstructed breasts look natural?

Breast reconstruction won't re-create the exact look and feel of your natural breast. However, the contour of your new breast may restore a silhouette similar to what you had before mastectomy.

How painful is breast reconstruction surgery?

Right after the surgery, you will probably feel weak, and you may feel pain for 2 to 3 weeks. You may have a pulling or stretching feeling in your breast area. You can expect to feel better and stronger each day, although you may need pain medicine for a week or two.

Are you completely flat after a mastectomy?

After mastectomy, people have the option of leaving the chest flat or having reconstruction surgery to replace the shape and form of breasts. The decision to have reconstruction or go flat is very personal, there is no right or wrong choice that fits everyone.
